This is the first watercolor painting I made in rehab. I am quite fond of it. While everyone was modeling theirs after an inspiration piece, I was happily going my own way. I think it looks wonderful matted. Maybe a simple wooden frame. What do you think?

Stroke

It’s been a while since I’ve updated the blog. On Dec. 27th I suffered a stroke. My entire right side is affected. I have feeling in all parts of my body but experience paralysis in my arm, hand, leg and foot. I am currently working on physical therapy, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy in rehab. I am in good spirits. I know I shall overcome this. My crocheting and knitting are put on hold for now. I’m experimenting with watercolor and polymer clay. I’ll add pics when I am able. WIP: Cathedral Rose Window Afghan

This is what I’ve been working on in-between making hat and bootie sets for the hospital. It looks a whole lot more complicated than it really is to make. You’re supposed to carry the yarn you’re not using to the back of the afghan. My problem is that the yarn was laying on top instead of toward the back so the result is that it is showing through the black sections. This really irks the perfectionist in me. I’m not sure whether to: 1.) Continue as is, 2.) Add a few rounds of black and call it done, or 3.) Start all over from scratch. I think I have enough yarn for this. What to do, what to do???

Royal Rose Cap

Made this cap on the spur-of-the-moment the other night. It’s the Beginner-friendly Cap from the premier issue (Aug./Sep. 2006) of Crochet Today magazine. I used nearly a whole ball of Lighthouse Waves yarn in Royal Rose, which is 70% wool and 30% soy fiber blend. The flower is actually a pin, so it’s completely detachable. The instructions called for using a 100 % wool yarn and then felting it. I used leftover acrylic yarn instead, which makes a huge flower. Then I glued a flower button to the center of it.

Gray Stole

I made this stole last month but didn’t get around to taking a picture until today. I don’t remember which of my magazines it came from, however, a Google search shows that it’s available as a free pattern download at freepatterns.com. The name of the pattern is Pretty in Pink Stole. I used scrap Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Gray Mist. I left off the edging because I ran short of yarn. Can’t wait until the weather turns a little cooler and I’ll be able wear it outdoors.

Edit: 8-25/11 – The name of the pattern is actually Rose Blush and it’s from the June 2006 edition of Annie’s Favorite Crochet magazine. The free pattern is NOT the same, but it is somewhat similar. I apologize if there was confusion.

Stain Glass Angel

This is my tissue paper art project or Art Therapy class. I actually had the idea for this last year. Bought all the supplies and started to work on it. I was tearing the tissue paper by hand and attaching it piece by piece. Unsurprisingly I never finished it. Then I got this assignment and decided to start all over. This time I used a paper cutter to cut strips for the stain glass, glued them to the foam board, and then I coated it with a layer of glossy mod podge.

The angel’s head and arms are ceramic pieces. For the body I used empty toilet paper rolls that were glued and taped together. The arms were attached to chenille stems, covered in fabric and then hot glued to the body. The fabric is recycled from an old nightgown. I really like that the angel has a classic elegance but the stain glass mosaic is modern. This turned out better than I had envisioned. Thank goodness for hot glue though, or else this project never would’ve been finished!

Fragile the Hippo

Fragile

One project I have for Art Therapy is to create an art piece inspired by a children’s storybook. It’s supposed to be something that the geriatric population can do. Meet Fragile the Hippo! She’s a character from the book Hurty Feelings by Helen Lester. Fragile was made using modeling clay, a ribbon, and wiggly eyes. I thought this would be a good project to help senior adults with the circulation in their hands.

Artist Trading Cards

These are my artist trading cards I made for Art Therapy class. They’re both done with watercolor paints and Sharpie permanent markers. I love mountains so of course I drew one and then as Bob Ross would have said, “A big tree lives right there.” I miss Bob! The second one I call Scrolled Hearts. Just doodling over a watercolor rainbow.

SoulCollage

A couple weeks ago we had a guest speaker come to our Art Therapy class to show us the SoulCollage technique. Here are a couple of mine:

I could explain the meaning behind each element, but I won’t. I’ll just sum it up by saying I miss my mom.

This one is all about me and my screen name. I thought it was just random words I strung together to get a screen name that wasn’t already taken, but I looked up the symbolism for star, tiger, and lily. It all fits. Very enlightening!

Happy Scrap Granny Blanket

This is your basic granny square afghan made with an H hook and 24 rounds of scrap yarn. I figure this should be a nice child’s blanket. Think I’ll end up donating it.
